Since its creation under our previous Orchestral Manager, Saffiyah Keig-Momin, the college orchestra has sprung from strength to strength holding termly concerts and providing ample opportunity for all levels of musicians to perform.
Now lead in coalition by Eloise Kenny-Ryder and Frannie Millar, the College orchestra looks forward to a new term and indeed, a new year, ushering in new players and faces to join in the exciting showcases of musical talent available within the College. Michaelmas term has always been an exciting, if not busy time, for all musicians within college, be that part of the College Orchestra, the College Choir, or one of the new chamber ensembles that has emerged from the orchestra. Next term proves to be of no exception and already the SMS Committee is planning a number of concerts including the now traditional 'Remembrance Concert'.
The College Orchestra is a non-auditioning orchestra and invites musicians of all levels to join, regardless of past experience. What makes Somerville College Orchestra unique is this accessibility to all students, postgrad and undergrad, musical and non-musical, experienced or not. Any student wishing to play, conduct, or have their own compositions commissioned by the orchestra is more than welcome to join and contact those at the fresher's stand in October.
To those who may wish to play an even greater role within the society, please do contact a member of the SMS committee with any queries, unanswered questions or requests!
